Don’t forget to sing in the lifeboat!

“The first rule of holes: when you’re in one, stop digging.”
Molly Ivins

Ever woke up on the wrong side of the bed so to speak wishing that you had just turned around and rolled over to the other side to try again?  It happens to all of us once in a while.  Perhaps you did not sleep as well as you would have liked. Perhaps there was much too much on your plate starting way too early in the morning.  Perhaps you just can’t get out of your own way. No worries my friends. It is all a part of being in this elite club called the human race. You may have good days where everything seems effortless and seamless. Then you may have days where you would like to revoke your membership.  The best advice for the latter is to just stand back with awareness that it is what it is and remember that this too shall pass.  However, in the interim, the only way you can make a shift in the right direction is to be conscious of your feelings and do something to make even the smallest shift to joy. With one small shift, the trajectory of your whole day can change.  For instance, when you greet someone with a smile, open the door for another, allow a car to pass you without honking your horn ,  you stop digging yourself a bigger hole and start to allow the potential for the light to return to your little part of the world.  As Voltaire said quite appropriately, “Life is a shipwreck, but we must not forget to sing in the lifeboats.”  While crazy things may happen around you and you may feel like you are on a sinking ship, with awareness you can look around, get yourself into a lifeboat, appreciate being surrounded by those who you love and who care about you and start to sing in gratitude.  When you do,  the whole challenge that you face in a day can become that much easier.  Perhaps today I shall take my own advice, as I thank you who have made my life easier- anyone want to join me in singing?
